Air-Pots have unusual, contoured walls, a sort of egg carton configuration, consisting of closed cones inside and open cones outside. In traditional pots, the flat walls inside the container repel roots and trigger a spiral process in which roots elongate without increasing root mass. The inner cones direct the roots outward into the open cones, where, because the air density in the soil is too high, the roots dehydrate and stop elongating. In response, the plant sends a signal to induce lateral root growth to compensate, leading to a denser root system, resulting in a massive increase in root mass. The porosity of the Air-Pot also creates better conditions for bacterial activity, thus increasing the plant's nutrient supply.
